Vitamin Sea: Sealife in the Azores

The Azores archipelago is one of the most dependable places in the northern hemisphere to spot whales. Some 26 different whales and dolphins have been recorded in this area – around a third of all the known species. The islands of the Azores are essentially just semi submerged volcanoes, set along a huge ridge that runs down the middle of the Atlantic.

The ridge is formed where the three tectonic plates (Eurasian, North American and African) meet. The last eruption, on Faial, was as recently as 1957 and there are still regular earthquakes. This deep, dark volcanic landscape makes it a perfect home for whales, and they come to feed on the vast amounts of squid that swim here. Amazingly, whaling only ended here as recently as the 1980s, and you will still see the cliff-top towers or vigias  from which spotters kept batch for the massive mammals. On seeing a whale, the watcher would light a rocket and thus summon the fleet. In the Autumn during the Vitamin Sea Festival 2019, you are most likely to see sperm whales. These are the world’s largest predators and are believed to have the biggest brains of any mammal on the planet. Yet despite their size, these are very timid – one of the factors that can make them quite elusive. This makes it all the more fantastic when one one of these animals surfaces nearby, blowing air from its huge, single nostril after a dive which may have taken it a mile below the surface. While we keep an eye out for whales, the waters here are rich with dolphins year round. You can expect to see Rissos, Bottle Nose, Atlantic Spotted and the Common Dolphin.
