Taking the leap from familiar waters to venturing somewhere new can be daunting, but our intensive 2 day course focuses on the skills you need to sail further afield. Taught in plain English and aimed at the ‘rusty’ navigator this course gives you practical skills for the real world. From Havana to Helsinki you’ll be using real charts and real routes, as well as revising essential chart-work techniques. As always at Rubicon 3, we promise not to bamboozle you with jargon or get bogged down in the detail, this is about getting you up and running so that you can head out on the water, wherever that may be.

What makes this course different
There is nothing like spending a weekend with a current expedition skipper. Someone who is not teaching RYA courses all year round but is actually out there, running sailing expeditions in Norway, Spitsbergen, Cuba, Iceland and more. It is a considerable step up from the skills and experience needed by the average RYA instructor and you will benefit hugely from tapping into that experience. Some techniques will be simper and quicker than you are used to, while others will be considerably more in depth than you may have ever seen. The critical thing is that none of this is theory for the sake of it - these are the real world hints, tips and skills that our skippers use on a daily basis to navigate in all around the world.
Day 1 – Key skills
Chart work: practical skills. What we do and what we don't. Looking especially at the interaction of electronic & paper charts and smart phone & tablet apps.
Tides. How to calculate them and how accurate should you be?
Weather forecasts. Where we get them, how accurate they are and what to do with them.
Publications. Which ones should you have and which sections are key.
Types of coastline. Adjusting your plan to the local region.
Formalities. What papers do you need. Who should have them and when.
Day 2 – Passage Planning
Passage planning techniques. What do our plans look like? How much detail do we go into on which parts. How we make them properly usable.
Passage planning scenarios. Rigorous exercises where you put everything into practise and plan a variety of different routes from different parts of the world, including the Scottish west coast, Dutch Friesian Islands, Norwegian fjords and Caribbean islands.
Through the afternoon of the final day you’ll be planning routes independently and then comparing notes with our instructors, refining and developing the process as you go. There’s no pressure to achieve a certain level and no assessment involved - just buckle up for a massive skills boost and enjoy this fun and inspirational weekend of learning.
