We are always interested in meeting committed, intelligent and hard working people. Even if we don't have a position available now, having met you means you will be at the forefront of our thinking if and when something changes. Please read the information below carefully. What marks out every single person who works with Rubicon 3 is their professionalism. We set the highest standards in the industry and you will need to show us that you can both meet those standards and are committed to improving them constantly. We are very proud of these standards and guard them jealously. As a Rubicon 3 skipper or mate you will be expected to perform to a very high level over long periods of time and this will require total commitment to what we are building here. You will be expected to give a minimum commitment of three years.
You will be working with and amongst some of the finest people in the industry. You will have constant training to broaden, improve and refresh your skills and you will be able to put those skills into practice in some of the most beautiful and exciting sailing grounds in the world. We believe there is nothing more motivating than needing to perform at your highest level and being able to learn from and be supported by other top class sailors.
To be a Rubicon 3 skipper, you will need to have worked as a professional sailor for a minimum of four years and have been skippering for a minimum of two years. (This is the absolute minimum required). You will need to show experience on different types of sailing vessel and in different parts of the world. You need to be able to show significant experience in skippering vessels of 60' or over and also show that you have at least one full year of delivering RYA Competent crew, Day Skipper and Yachtmaster courses. You will be required to show a very high skill level of seamanship and to have strong skills in celestial navigation, coastal navigation and radar. (If your celestial navigation is not as good as it should be, we will help you get to the required level - everything else must be at a very high level). You will need a good level of physical fitness and exceptional references form your past two employers. No matter your past background, you will be expected to act as mate for your first three trips with Rubicon 3 to allow you to learn how they are run. Ongoing, we also ask skippers to mate for other skippers at least once a year in order to facilitate learning and ensure the spread of good practice.

First Mates: what we look for
We believe in developing professional sailors and helping them make the jump into skippering larger yachts. We also know that getting the required skills and experience can be very tough. If you have the right character and attitude, we will invest in you and help you make that jump. As such, you will be expected to make a minimum commitment of three years. You may progress to skippering trips during this time. You will need to show a minimum of two years experience as a professional sailor. You will have your RYA Cruising Instructor or above and will have at least one season of teaching practical sailing courses on yachts. We expect you to have the ability to teach any aspect of the RYA Yachmaster syllabus and to have very strong theory skills. The mate works very hard on these trips and you will need a good level of physical fitness. You will also need to have exceptional references from your past employer.
You must have:
Please fill in the application form below. We will get back to you and either ask you to proceed with the next stage of the application or tell you why we don't think you are suitable at this time. If we do ask you to proceed, you will complete a theory test that takes around two hours to complete. This covers all areas of the RYA Yachtmaster syllabus, radar, celestial navigation, maintenance skills and more. While you are not expected to be at the required level in every area, it will give us a very good indication of your current skill level. If you meet the required standards in enough areas, we will then invite you for an interview. We recognise that this is a tough process but the rewards if you are successful are working in a very tight, very supportive team, made up of top quality sailors in some truly amazing locations.
