Vitamin Sea: Favourite cocktails of the Rubicon 3 crew

Whether it’s sitting up on deck after a glorious day’s sailing or enjoying a post dinner cocktail while exploring a new town,  there’s no doubt that Rubicon 3 crew members have drunk more than a few cocktails over the years! The social side on these expeditions is fairly legendary, and so we asked some regulars which cocktails have happy memories for them.

PINA COLADA

What does one do in a storm bound Norwegian anchorage? Make cocktails and watch movies of course. One such time, John turned out to be our very own Top Gun cocktail maker. Asking around, a Pina Colada was the desired drink – but that’s not something one necessarily has the ingredients for – or so we thought. Here’s how he did it:

  • Four tins of coconut milk, that were supposed to be for the curry that night
  • A surprising amount of our remaining rum
  • The juice from a large tin of canned pineapple chunks (quickly followed by eating all the pineapple!
  • A good slug of milk (that’s breakfast gone….)
  • Mix it together vigorously and ENJOY!

It may have wiped out the next two meals by using their ingredients – but oh my word, what a drink it proved to be!

GIN & TONIC

For me, it has to be the ubiquitous Gin and Tonic. My great grandfather worked for the British East India Company at the height of the British Empire. At that time, malaria was wreaking havoc with the men. It was treated with quinine, which has a fairly abysmal taste. To counter this, the officers mixed theirs with sugar, lime, and gin to make it bearable – and my beloved G&T was born. Today’s tonic water obviously  contains much less quinine, making it less bitter as a result. I have enjoyed so many G&Ts on my three Rubicon 3 adventures – I like mine with Hendricks if possible – but each one has been made even better by knowing that I am ensuring I don’t get malaria! Here’s my recipe:

A (really) healthy slug of gin. Top us the glass with really cold tonic water. Add a slice of lemon. Enjoy!

CAIPRINHA

I believe the essence of a good sailor’s cocktail is that it’s makeable. Every time I’ve sailed with Rubicon 3, we’ve had amazing food and the real plus side of that is I usually have what I need to make a great apres-sail beverage! However, I’ve been asked to name my number one choice for these expeditions and so it has to be the Brazilian Caiprinha. It’s a gorgeous drink, we always seem to have what we need to make it on board and it tastes a dream. Here’s how I do it:

Squeeze a whole lime into the glass, mix in lots of sugar and some water to make a syrup. Pour in as much spirit as you can without the skipper giving you the quizzical look that says ‘wow’ and then mix mix mix until it’s ready to go. What spirit you say? Vodka, Whisky, Rum – it’s all delicious!
