A two day intensive theory course in celestial navigation. Taught in plain English by experts in the field. If you are new to celestial navigation or have taken a course before but not understood it - these two days are for you. You will learn how to locate the positions of the celestial bodies, use a sextant to measure their altitude above the horizon and translate that information into a position on a chart.
Beginner through to intermediate
You will be issued with the Rubicon 3 celestial navigation course book. Sextants are provided at the course
No prior training is required in celestial navigation. You do need to have basic experience in using a nautical chart and be able to plot a position on it. You do not need maths skills!
Instructor led classroom training
Full course outline
Greenwich Hour Angle
The PZX triangle
Sight reduction tables
Preparing a plotting sheet
Conversion of arc to time
May 19-20 2018 (held at Young Bristol Activity Centre, Pooles Wharf, BS8 4RU)
August 18-19 2018 (Haslar Marina, Gosport)
September 08-09 2018 (Fulham, London)
October 13-14 2018 (Haslar Marina, Gosport)
You don't need any knowledge of astronomy, physics, maths or the dark arts. It will help you if you can already use a basic chart for coastal navigation, but to be honets even that is not essential.
One of the most common beliefs is that you have to be able to do all sorts of mathematical chicanery. Absolutely not. So long as you can add and subtract (& yes, you can use a calculator to help you!)
Celestial navigation can be made incredibly complicated. Anyone who has attended a course or tried to read one of the text books will have experienced this. While there is lots to take in, the basic concepts are actually very simple. We have written our own course book, in plain English, and the weekend is taught by real experts in the field. This means, come Sunday pm, you are going to have a very realistic chance of being at the point you need to be to go and try navigating using a sextant at sea.
The courses start at 0900 hrs on the Saturday morning and finish at 1700hrs on Sunday. They are run in Portsmouth, London, Bristol, Birmingham and Glasgow. Food and accommodation is not included.
