Relax - this is a holiday!
From the moment you step on board, you're guaranteed a really warm and friendly welcome. Whatever adventures are to come, this is first and foremost a holiday and being relaxed and happy on board is the most important thing of all. Whether you are a complete novice or a more experienced sailor, we take your individual experience on board very seriously.
We know you may be feeling a bit anxious or nervous at first - maybe even before you book. Will you be able to sail okay? What will it be like living with seven other people? Will you be cold, wet and tired? These are entirely normal questions that most people have. Rubicon 3 may sail to some of the more extreme areas in the world but Bruce & Rachael set up the company with the specific goal of it being warm, welcoming and supportive to everyone. The boats are really warm, comfortable and incredibly safe, while your mate and skipper are not just hugely skilled but chosen for how friendly and supportive they are.
You will be warm, dry, comfortable, eat really well and a have a very sociable time.
It sounds obvious for a holiday doesn't it, but it's not as common on a sailing boat as you might think. In essence, we over-spec our heaters and don't have any set budget for food. Our skippers are briefed to buy high quality, local food and to make sure there's a great and varied menu. Expect bacon and eggs for breakfast, fresh salads and proper dinners such as roast beef, potatoes and all the trimmings. We can accommodate vegetarians and most other diets too. We'll often have some wine with dinner, maybe a beer or two and even a whisky as we chat into the evening. With a really eclectic mix of crew from around the world, these are enormously social and fun evenings.
You will be fully involved in the sailing.
Absolutely central to our ethos is that you are fully involved from day one, no matter your past experience. Whether you are starting from scratch or have circumnavigated, we will help, guide and teach you. Your inputs will be central to where we go and how we get there. There are very few other boats out there in which you can get anything like this involvement. Full crew involvement is the way to get fully immersed in an experience and the very best way to learn - and it is at the core of what we do. You'll be navigating, hoisting sails, helming, dropping the anchor and more. No passengers on these expeditions!
You will get time to head ashore and explore
We love the sailing but half the adventure is heading ashore in a new country town or deserted anchorage and having a proper explore. We schedule in as much time for this as we can. We can rarely say quite where or when as the weather is king and it'll be you the crew helping make the plans and choosing where to go and when. You will be sailing to so many amazing places and half the adventure, half the holiday is getting off the boat and heading inland!
Each boat has two instructors on board. Again this is very unusual. It is a no brainer to us. It makes the boat far safer and means you get all the instructional input you could want. These are not just any instructors either. The skipper will be one of the leading expedition skippers around, picked for their huge experience but also their friendly, patient manner. Absolutely no shouting on board these boats! The mate will be at a minimum an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean and RYA instructor and this makes them very highly qualified. It is an exhaustive process to find and recruit the right crew but the results are worth it.
Many sailing companies follow the letter of the law when it comes to maritime safety, but we go further and follow the spirit of it. All our yachts are Cat 0 rated by the MCA, which means that they have the structural strength and equipment on board to sail anywhere in the world, for unlimited periods of time. There is no higher rating. This compares to the Cat 2 rating that many charter and sailing school boats have. This is far less rigorous and limits them to 60nm offshore.
We have selected the Crewsaver 290N as our lifejacket on board. Much more expensive than many other lifejackets, our tests showed it to be unrivalled in its performance and far superior to almost any other lifejacket out there. The yachts have Cat A rated liferafts on board (the best you can get), satellite communications, radar, AIS and Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs). We also equip them with 200m long Jordan Series Drogues. Incredibly rare due to their size and cost, these devices are far and away the best defensive measure for a yacht at sea caught in a storm. This may all sound like we are proud of our approach to safety. It's true. We are. Very!
Comfortable sleeping accommodation
Every bunk has big lee-cloths that when pulled up pretty much hide you away from the rest of the world. You also have your own bunk light and personal USB charging point so you can keep your smart phone and other equipment charged. We also provide a proper comfortable pillow to help ensure you sleep really well.
All the sailing equipment is provided
We provide all the specialist sailing equipment, so other than a sleeping bag and waterproof boots, you shouldn't need to buy anything else. When you join, you'll be issued top quality foul weather jackets and salopettes, a lifejacket and a fladen immersion suit which will ensure you stay really warm. Find out more details here.
There's no need to be an athlete!
Sailing is a physical activity, which is part of the fun of it. However, you will be more than able to contribute and be involved. In the years since we started there have been maybe two people who found it too challenging and that is from literally hundreds and hundreds of crew (& even those two still loved their time with us!) So long as you are normally active and healthy, you will have absolutely nothing to worry about. Find out more about your fellow crew members

The smoking of any form of tobacco is forbidden on board or on the dock next to the boat. We also very strongly discourage the smoking of any tobacco at any time between the start and end date as the smell comes on-board into confined living space. The use of e-cigarettes is fine.
